LSV, Health and physical activity

The European Commission has been working on the links between health, physical activity and nutrition since 2007. Its aim is to support all initiatives that can improve public health. The Member States have already implemented several actions regarding this issue, as the German example shows.

Agricultural Health Insurance Companies promote

the "Nutrition Driving Licence"
A "Do-It-Yourself" Healthy Diet

As part of a project for the sustainable introduction of a so-called "nutrition driving licence" at schools the German "LandFrauen" Association is committed to a modern and healthy diet. The "nutrition driving licence" is a teaching concept for pupils in the third and fourth form. The children learn through play how to handle food and kitchen implements, supplemented by hygiene rules and knowledge of the food pyramid. It goes without saying that one of the most important factors is that the children have fun taking an active role, trying out things for themselves and eating together. This is also guaranteed by the themes of the individual teaching units such as "Funny bread faces" "Crispy fun with vegetables" or "Brightly mixed noodle salads". Cutting, peeling, grating, weighing, seasoning, pureeing, laying the table, behaving at the table – at the end of the six double lessons pupils already know some of the routine and proudly take their newly acquired knowledge and personal driving licence document home.

During the teaching units the "LandFrauen" support the teachers by taking over the practical work in the classroom and giving the teachers advice with the project. In this way the children acquire important skills concerning how to handle food and the aspects of a healthy and balanced diet.

The project is subsidised by the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection as well as the agricultural health insurance companies. These pay a share of the costs of the work performed by the "LandFrauen".
