The European Commissionner responsible for Agriculture and Rural Development made a speech at a conference called "Balanced rural areas and balance in the CAP" and organised by the Women's Food and Farming Union of Wales. It was the occasion for her to give her vision of the place of women in agriculture and rural life, as she pointed out that although the number of women who manage farms is higher than it used to be, it is still “relatively low”. She also notices that in many rural areas, women are leaving – especially the younger women. Third remark, she suggested that some women living in the countryside “are not aware of the rights which are theirs, or of the possible opportunities of which they could take advantage”.
